Picking Golf Clubs That Feel Right For You
When you decide to start golfing, you will feel very excited about finding the golf clubs to get on with it as soon as possible. This feeling can be compared to what you feel when you are going out to bring your first car home or to take over the keys to your first mortgage house. You would naturally be hoping that it would be really a worthy investment that would keep you happy and contented over a long time.
If it is to be a good investment, you should make sure that you very carefully select the clubs that would perfectly blend with your style of swinging. A well-made choice now would save you a lot of expense and frustration later. In selecting a club that would give you years of uninterrupted satisfactory service, there are several criteria that should receive your careful consideration; and you could avoid paying for something that you don’t want by making a checklist now itself of what properties you need to look at in purchasing a good golf club to suit your technique and preferences.
The overall feel of the club as you hold it with a firm grip and swing it, which is a most important property, comes from the combination of such factors as the club’s length, its weight and the flex of its shaft among a few others. You may try swinging several clubs until you find the one that feels most comfortable to work with. As you experiment with more and more clubs, you will gradually learn to appreciate certain attributes that increase or decrease your overall satisfaction. You will then be able to say whether a club of normal length (from your naval to ground level) or ones a little shorter or longer maximizes your satisfaction. Similarly, you will know whether it is light clubs or heavy clubs that you find more comfortable to swing with. The list goes on; and as you keep trying out more and more clubs, progressively you will be testing them more and more objectively armed with some additional knowledge of preferential attributes and specifications you acquire with every swing.
The shaft material contributes not only to its weight, but also to another important property called the flex. Graphite clubs that are lighter and provide a higher flex than their more rigid steel counterparts are good for beginners and others who can swing very fast; but many golfers prefer the extra weight of the steel clubs that give them a feeling of extra power and momentum for their shots. The higher weight of the steel clubs can compensate for lack of speed in golfers with slower swings. You will have to actually smack a few balls over long ranges before you can make an unshakable decision on this particular aspect. Most club stores would allow you to take out the clubs for testing under certain controlled conditions.
The head is one of the most important and vulnerable components of a golf club. While graphite shafts tend to be good for beginners, the head may have to come from a much stronger material like iron to absorb the bulk of the thrust of rocketing golf balls all over the course over time. Even those golfers who prefer lighter clubs find out they cannot execute their shots to perfection without a strong and heavy head. You can get the mass of the head adjusted to your exact preferences.
The grip too is by no means an attribute to be ignored. You will find that you cannot get anywhere with a golf club the way it should without a firm grip on the handle. This is more so if your palms tend to sweat much. Even for a golfer who is immune from the sweating problem, he may still get sore hands and gradually loose proper control over the club as a game progresses.
