Understanding The Main Kinds Of Golf Clubs

It may be a laughing matter for golfers new to the game to find that a gofer carries as much as 14 golf clubs in his bag just to be striking a ball all around the course. However, if you play or at least follow an experienced gofer on the course through a match, you will watch with amusement how he picks different sticks from the bag at different stages of the game.

Let us examine what these sticks are broadly and their respective functionalities. When you start playing golf yourself what you read here might come handy in deciding on the most appropriate club to use based on the different shots that you are called upon to play as the changing situations demand.  As you become more proficient on these aspects while simultaneously improving your swing to strike the ball accurately and with the required power, you will start improving and winning games.

Golf Clubs are broadly divided into three categories called the Woods, Irons and Putters. In spite of its misleading name, woods do not have any of its parts or components made of wood. In fact their heads are turned out of either hollow steel or hollow titanium. They are the drivers and are designed to propel the ball over very long distances. The woods constitute less than half the clubs totaling to 14.  The woods are the longest out of all the clubs and are mostly used on the straight long portions of the course.  Much accuracy is not expected from them apart from putting the ball as far away as possible on the course.

Irons are the clubs that are used very frequently during a game and constitute more than half the number of clubs carried. Irons too serve the purpose of putting the ball at large distances at a higher accuracy level than the woods; although not as far to the extent that woods do. The irons too have different name or values depending on the extent of accuracy and the various uses in respect of each of those irons. After the woods have sent the ball to different broad ranges, the irons serve the purpose of getting the ball as close as possible to a target hole to various levels of accuracy depending on the distance to be covered in each case. Using the most appropriate iron for a given hit is the most delicate question faced by golfers until they become highly proficient in the game. Some specific uses of an iron include getting a golfer away from a sand trap and popping the golf ball up and over obstacles.

Finally, there is the putter of which there is usually only one in the bag, and as its name implies, it is the club used to just shove the ball gently in to a hole from very close range as short as just a few yards. The putter would come into play mainly in the putting green located towards the last stretch of the course as well as in certain other areas in the golf course in situations requiring a very high level of accuracy. Putters are not supposed to make the ball fly in the air like woods and irons, but rather to just slowly push the ball all along the ground. Putting is the climax and the triumphant point of the game

Woods, irons and the putter all combine to make the game complete with all type of clubs playing their respective intended unique roles. When you start spotting without hesitation whether to play an iron or a wood for a given situation in addition to which of the woods or irons, you can be satisfied that you have come quite a long way in golf. However, apart from the correct choice of the club, to what level of perfection you execute the strokes depend on the accuracy and speed of your swing, and the technique. It is imperative that you work hard on all these aspects to improve your game with every game you play by sheer application and commitment to come nearer and nearer to perfection and excellence with more and more practice and experience.
